NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –  The Atlantic 10 Conference once again ranked high in NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) data, with 80 percent of A-10 teams rating at or above the national average and 42 teams with perfect APR scores of 1,000.

The 80 percent of A-10 teams at or above the national average represents 182 of the league’s 228 teams. The national average for most sports is 984. The Division I mean for men’s basketball is 967, for women’s basketball it’s 982 and baseball is 977. An impressive 12 women’s basketball teams (out of 15) were above the national average, while more than half the conference’s men’s basketball teams reached that same distinction.

The NCAA Academic Progress Rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance of each team in every sport. The most recent APRs, released Tuesday, are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2018-19, 2019 -20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years. This year’s report also includes Loyola Chicago, as a part of the A-10. The Ramblers officially joined the league on July 1, 2022.

The sports with the most teams above the national average includes all 15 women’s cross country teams and 14 of 15 women’s soccer teams. Men’s Cross Country and Women’s Track and Field each had 13 of 15 teams above the national average. Women’s swimming and diving (11 teams) and women’s lacrosse, (10 teams), also had every team that sponsors the sport in the Atlantic 10 above the national average.

Overall, 42 A-10 teams had perfect 1,000 APR scores, with Davidson and Dayton recording the highest number of teams that posted perfect multi-year APR scores with six each. Fordham, George Washington and Rhode Island each had five teams post perfect scores and Saint Joseph’s had four. In total, the 42 teams with perfect scores represents 18 percent of all A-10 teams.

Women’s cross country was the sport with the highest number of perfect teams, followed by men’s cross country (five), and men’s and women’s tennis and women’s swimming and diving each of which had four. Three Atlantic 10 women’s sports had every team post a multi-year score that was either perfect or above the national Division I average of 984 – women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse and women’s swimming and diving.
