Hot Bats Drive VCU into A-10 Baseball Semifinals

TYSONS, Va. -- Second seeded VCU got hits from seven of its nine starters, including five players with a multi-hit game to run past Dayton, 10-3 Wednesday in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship at Capital One Park.
The Rams advance to face Richmond Friday in the semifinals with a championship berth on the line. Dayton falls into the consolation bracket and will face George Washington at 11 am on Thursday in an elimination game.

VCU collected 14 hits, and scored in six of the nine innings. Eli Weisner did the most damage, with a grand slam in the fourth that turned a two-run lead into an. 8-2 advantage for the Rams. A solo homer by William Bean was the other round-tripper for VCU.

Jack Hoeymans (4-2) took the win for the Rams, with a predetermined 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Dayton starter Eli Majick (5-5) was credited with the loss with eight runs (seven earned) and eight hits, striking out six.

Dayton’s three runs all came off RBI singles, first by Alejandro Carzola for the first run of the game, then Ivan Arias in the fourth and Castillo in the fifth. Eddie Yamin IV, Mason Dobbie and Arias all had two hits for the Flyers.

Eike and Casey Kleinman were the most prolific of VCU batter, with Kleinman posting a 3-for-5 performance and Eike recording a 3-for-4 performance.
