TYSONS, Va. – Seventh-seeded Saint Joseph’s got timely hits and kept No. 6 Massachusetts scoreless for five straight innings to secure a 12-2 win and advance in the consolation bracket in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship.
The Hawks (27-25) will face top-seeded Saint Louis Thursday at 3:00 pm in an elimination game. The loss was UMass’ second of the championship and is eliminated.
Will McCausland (4-4) threw six innings, allowing two runs, one hit and eight strikeouts to earn the win.
Each team scored a run on a solo home run in the first inning, Ryan Cesarini for Saint Joseph’s and Mike Gervasi for the Minutemen. From there, it was all Hawks, and Owen Petrich drove Max Hitman home in the third and then four straight RBI singles to record six runs and break the game open.
Hitman added one more run for the Hawks on a sac fly in the seventh, but UMass countered this one, scoring its first run since the opening inning on a Carter Hanson double down the right field line to score Gervasi.
The Hawks tacked on four more runs in the seventh and ninth innings, two on RBI singles and one on a fielder’s choice RBI to secure the win.
Cesarini and Weingartner each went 3-for-5 and combined for five of SJU’s 11 RBI. Nolan Tichy, Hanson and Gervasi all had two hits to pace the Minutemen.
Robbie O’Connor (3-6) took the loss, throwing 3.1 innings with four hits with three strikeouts.
