TYSONS, Va. – VCU’s Cooper Benzin hit an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a two-all tie and lift the second-seeded Rams past No. 7 Saint Joseph’s, 4-2 Tuesday at Capital One Park.

VCU (34-21) advances in the winner’s bracket to face the winner Tuesday’s nightcap between No. 3 Dayton and No. 6 Massachusetts. Saint Joseph’s will play in an elimination game Wednesday at 7:00 pm versus either UMass or George Washington.

Benzin’s heroics drove in Brandon Eike in a one-out pitch, the first run by either team since the fourth inning. Eli Weisner added an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI single to left that pushed Willie Bean home.

Brian Curley (6-0) threw a strong game in relief in earning the win, tossing 5.2 innings with five hits, just one run and six strikeouts with four walks. Owen Tappy picked up his fifth save of the season in a closing appearance.

The runs came in bursts of two, with VCU scoring twice in the first inning on back-to-back home runs by Weisner and Eike, who was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Rams.

The Hawks (34-21) tied it with runs in the third and fourth innings, starting with a solo shot to left center by Ryan Weingartner in the third. Ryan Picollo’s RBI doubled to left center and Tim Dickinson scored. Saint Joseph’s threatened in the sixth and ninth, but left the potential runs stranded.

Weingartner’s 2-for-4 performance with one RBI led the Hawks. Colin Yablonski (4-5) took the loss for SJU.
