TYSONS, Va. -- No. 4 Richmond used an eight run second inning and never looked back, defeating No. 5 George Washington, 12-4 in the first game of the 2024 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship on Tuesday morning.
Down 2-0 after the Revolutionaries used a Brett Young home run to left center and a McGwire Tuffy RBI single to strike first, Richmond fired off eight runs on five hits and an error to take a commanding lead.
After GW retired the first two batters in the second inning, 10 straight Spiders reached base, plating eight runs. Jake Topolski started it off with a single before three straight walks scored the first of the Richmond flurry. Aaron Whitley got the second hit of the inning to drive in a run, while Jordan Jaffe, Phil Bernstein and Zach Lass did the same to bring the Spiders to eight runs.
Jack Arcamone homered in the following inning to extend Richmond's lead to 9-2. George Washington scored two more in the fourth off a Nick Mullen double and Sam Gates sacrifice fly but that was all they'd get as Richmond added insurance in the sixth and seventh to extend the lead to the final 12-4 score.
Chase Topolski pitched four innings of scoreless relief for the Spiders, striking out five and only allowing three hits.
Young and Mullen each had three hits for George Washington.
Richmond will advance to take on No. 1 Saint Louis tomorrow at 11:00 a.m., while George Washington will wait to see when they play next in the elimination bracket.
