AMHERST, Mass. -- In a game that was within one goal for the final 35 minutes, Richmond's Lukas Olsson scored what would ultimately be the game-winning goal with 1:54 left to push the No. 2 Spiders into the Atlantic 10 Championship game for the second year in a row on Saturday, May 4.
This game started as a game of runs as Richmond started hot out of the gates, scoring the games first five goals, leading 4-0 after the first quarter. High Point controlled the second quarter, scoring the game's next five goals, all in the first 11 minutes of the frame to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. The team's then traded goals, as they would the entire second half to lead to a 7-7 halftime knot.
In the second half, the Spiders and Panthers traded blows the entire way, with no team taking more than a one goal lead. High Point tied the game at nine with 8:07 left, where the score would stay until under two minutes left. Olsson cashed in a look from deep to give the Spiders a 10-9 lead they wouldn't relinquish. After scoring again to make it 11-9, Richmond would withstand a late Panther push to take the semifinal contest 11-10.
Midfielder Lance Madonna led the Richmond efforts with a game-high seven points on four goals and three assists. High Point saw a balanced scoresheet as eight Panthers tallied a goal with Jack Sawyer and Brayden Mayea each scoring two.
Richmond will face No. 1 Saint Joseph's in the Atlantic 10 Men's Lacrosse Championship game on Saturday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m.
