WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Massachusetts junior Carter Hanson as its Baseball Player of the Week. George Mason junior Chad Gartland was chosen as the league’s Pitcher of the Week. Richmond freshman Jack Arcamone earned Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played April 22-28.
On a 4-1 week for UMass, Carter Hanson had a .450 batting percentage, a .435 on base percentage and a .800 slugging percentage. An outfielder from Bloomington, Minn., he strung together nine hits, including two home runs and a double, totaled five runs and added 12 RBI in 20 at bats on the week. At UConn, he had one hit, which was a home run, with a run and two RBI on the night. In the 15-4 win at Siena, the junior contributed two hits, including a double, and an RBI. In game one of the Saint Joseph’s series, Hanson went 3-for-4 with his seventh homer of the year, while driving in a career-best five runs and scoring two runs of his own. Game two saw one hit, a run and two RBI from Hanson, while registering two hits, one run and two RBI in the series finale against SJU. In the field, Hanson tallied 14 putouts and two assists.
Gartland struck out 11 batters and tossed a complete game to lead the Patriots to a 3-2 victory over VCU on Saturday afternoon at Spuhler Field. He recorded the third complete game of his career, while his 11 strikeouts are the second-most that he's posted in a game as a Patriot. A right-hander from Rochester, N.Y., Gartland threw 121 pitches in the outing, the third-most he has thrown in a game in his NCAA career.
A utility player form Trumbull, Conn., Arcamone served as the designated hitter in all four games last week. He slashed a .412 average, a .444 on-base percentage and a .706 slugging percentage, and hit 7-for-17 with five RBI, six runs scored, one home run (a grand slam versus Norfolk State) and two doubles against St. Bonaventure.
