WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Richmond senior Sebastian Miano and Dayton freshman Kyle McNally its Men's Tennis Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively. On the women's side, Rhode Island sophomore Sophie Herrman earned Performer of the Week, while St. Bonaventure freshman Cirkeline Lundberg nabbed Rookie accolades. The awards, announced Tuesday, are for matches played Feb. 12-18
Miano led the Spiders to a 4-2 win over JMU on Saturday with a pair of victories. In doubles, the Rome, Italy product, alongside freshman Dylan Atkinson, defeated Sadek/Sinopoli, 6-3 to help secure the doubles point for Richmond. On singles court No. 4, he defeated Giersiepen 6-4, 7-5 to put Richmond up 3-2 in the match. He moved to 3-3 in singles on the year and 4-1 in doubles.
McNally continued his tear to start his freshman spring, going 2-0 against two high-level opponents in Illinois State and Western Michigan. McNally, playing at No. 3 singles, won decisively in Dayton’s win over ISU, 6-3, 6-2, and then provided one of the Flyers’ two points against WMU, winning 6-2, 7-5. The Algonquin, Ill., native is now 7-1 on the spring season having won six consecutive matches, and is 9-1 in his last 10 dating back to the fall.
Herrman was perfect on the week in both singles and doubles, going 2-0 at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for Rhode Island. Playing on the road at Quinnipiac, the Zionsville, Ind., native clinched URI's 4-3 battle against the Bobcats when she came back to defeat Anagha Shankar 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Earlier in the match, she and Valentina Cvackova teamed up for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles to help the Rams secure the doubles point. Then against in-state rival Providence, Herrman beat Camille Barrera Aguirre 1-6, 6-0, 6-0, and added a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, again with Cvackova. She has won four straight singles matches at No. 1 and is now a team-best 9-4 overall for the year.
Lundberg was a perfect 2-0 in singles and doubles, helping the Bonnies to wins over Niagara and Slippery Rock. Against Niagara, Lundberg paired with Sienna Smith at No. 2 doubles, earning a 6-1 victory. Playing at the top spot in singles, Lundberg defeated Niagara's Elena Mayet in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Sunday against Slipper Rock, Lundberg teamed with Abbie Tyler at No. 2 doubles, capturing a 6-1 win. The rookie from Hellerup, Denmark, capped off a perfect weekend with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-4, over Amaia Balaguer Brau.
