Flyers Fall To Vanderbilt After Phenomenal Effort

Dayton Battled The No. 9 Team In The Net Rankings To The Very End

DAYTON- The University of Dayton Women's Basketball team delivered an impressive performance against Vanderbilt on Thursday at UD Arena.
 
Although not victorious, the Flyers (6-5) tied the game in the third quarter and continued to battle the Commodores (11-1) until the end.
 
GAME BREAKDOWN
 
1st Quarter: Dayton 15, Vanderbilt 31
  • Sophomore Jayda Johnson hit a clean three pointer in the first minute after an assist from senior Ivy Wolf to start off the game.
  • Johnson was then assisted by graduate student Rikki Harris to put in another bucket at the rim. 
  • Senior Arianna Smith received the assist from junior Nayo Lear for a layup with 8:04 left.
  • Wolf found herself in the paint and put in a reverse layup for her first points of the game with 4:35 remaining in the quarter. 
  • Smith put the Flyers into double-digit scoring with a layup and assisted pass from Harris. 
  • Smith put in another basket at the rim with 1:28 to go in the first quarter. 
  • Senior Shannon Wheeler had a solo layup to score the Flyers' final basket of the first quarter.
 
2nd Quarter: Dayton 39, Vanderbilt 46
  • Smith made two of two free throws to start off second quarter scoring.
  • Nicole Stephens found Wheeler in the paint who was able to finish at the rim for two. 
  • Wolf assisted sophomore Ajok Madol for a layup to give the Flyers a 6-0 run to start the quarter. 
  • Graduate student Nicole Stephens kept the momentum going and was able to put one in from under the rim. 
  • Wolf made a jump shot with 6:01 to go in the half making the score Dayton 25, Vanderbilt 35.
  • Wolf escaped defense with a spin move and sank another short jumper to keep the Flyers within reach with 4:40 to go. 
  • The Flyers had more success at the line, as Wolf also went two for two. 
  • Wolf was hit with a pass to bring the ball back out and hit a quick three to tighten the gap to 7 points with 1:52 to go. 
  • Harris had yet another strong showing at the free throw line, making both shots.
  • Next up, was Smith to continue the trend of shooting 100 percent from the free throw line to wrap up the first half. 
 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 56, Vanderbilt 59
  • Smith's put-back layup opened the second half scoring for the Flyers.
  • Wolf found the bottom of the basket with a mid-range shot making the score 43-48 in favor of Vanderbilt.
  • With a quick turnaround, Wolf put in another shot at the rim to tighten the gap. 
  • Wolf then tied the game with a deep three and a chance to take the lead while drawing a foul with 7:12 to go in the third quarter. 
  • Wolf made her way down the court and to the basket to put up two more points with 5:49 remaining. 
  • Wheeler put up a layup keeping the Flyers in tight competition making the score Dayton 52, Vanderbilt 57. 
  • Shortly after, Wheeler went back for more and made a jump shot to tighten the gap to only three points with 2:57 to go in the third quarter. 
  • Smith had a clutch put-back shot in the paint after Nayo Lear had a breakaway with 1:40 remaining. 
  • As the clock expired, the Flyers were not able to put up another shot, but kept Vanderbilt's lead to only three points.
 
4th Quarter: Dayton 66, Vanderbilt 80
  • After she got fouled, Wheeler made two of two free throw shots for the Flyers' first points of the final quarter. 
  • Smith put in a layup with 5:46 remaining in the game. Dayton 60, Vanderbilt 67.
  • Harris pulled up and sank a jumper with 3:23 to go.
  • Wolf got off a shot just inside the three point line to make the score Dayton 64, Vanderbilt 76 with under two minutes remaining.
  • Thanks to aggressive rebounding the Flyers got possession and Madol put in another bucket with 45 seconds on the clock. 
 
KEY STATS
 
70% - The Flyers shot 70 percent from the field in the first half. 
23 - Ivy Wolf had a team-high 23 points and had 10 rebounds for her first double-double as a Flyer.
92% - The Flyers shot 92 percent from the free throw line, going 11-of-12.
12 - Arianna Smith had 12 rebounds to go with 16 points for her third double-double of the season.
7 - The Flyer's largest lead was seven points at the start of the game.
32 off 26 – Vanderbilt had 32 points off of 26 Dayton turnovers.
 
UP NEXT
The Flyers will hit the road after Christmas taking on Richmond on Dec. 29 at The Robins Center in Richmond, Va. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
