NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Davidson sophomore Jacob Friend as its Baseball Player of the Week.  Richmond graduate student Brock Weirather was named Pitcher of the Week. George Mason freshman James Quinn-Irons was selected as the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played May 1-7

Friend hit .667 (6-9) with three home runs and seven RBI as Davidson won 2 of 3 against VCU. A catcher from Arlington, Va., he finished with a 2.417 OPS, including .750 on-base and 1.667 slugging. Friend homered twice, including a grand slam, in the series-opening win over the Rams. He then went 3-for-4 in the second series game and homered again in Saturday's win.

As his offense exploded for a 15-run output on Friday against SBU, Weirather threw eight scoreless innings, scattering three hits and one hit batter with seven strikeouts. The Polk, City, Fla., native, did not issue a walk in the game. This is the second time he's tossed eight scoreless with seven strikeouts this season, after first accomplishing the feat in a 6-0 non-conference win over Siena.

An outfielder from Reston, Va., Quinn-Irons went 8-for-17 (.471) with five RBI and five runs scored in four games to help the Patriots go 3-1 on the week. In the rubber game against Fordham on Sunday, he went 4-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored to help the Patriots to an 11-10 win. In game two of the series against the Rams, Quinn-Irons was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored in Mason's 10-5 victory.
