SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- George Washington won its first-ever Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship Friday, winning both the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 races en route to 52 team points at Fish Creek.
The Colonials are the fourth team to claim the A-10 title, joining Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Saint Joseph’s. Rhody had won four straight team championships entering the 2023 regatta, and URI and UMass have collectively captured 25 of the 27 titles. George Washington earns the A-10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
GW secured the title with a 7:22.888 finish in the Varsity 8, beating second-place Rhode Island by almost 8 seconds. Naomi Lee (Cox), Natalie Kreusch (8), Lana Sumner-Borema (7), Alexa Nealy (6), Ezi Emenike (5), Anna Golbus (4), Bianca Rose (3), Flannery Dunn (2), Lily Sarnowski (1).
George Washington placed third in the Varsity 4, the first scoring event, which Rhode Island won with the team of Lily Stasaitis (Cox), Jessica Tosi (4), Alexis Moore (3), Jasmyn Hayes (2) and Emma Larsh (1) and a time of 8:54.294.
The Second Varsity 8 went in the Colonials favor, with a time of 7:59.485. Caroline Crutsinger-Perry (Cox), Katana Yu (8), Elizabeth Rowland (7), Anne Avendt (6), Eliza Price (5), Kendall Dorn (4), Mia Cremona (3), Kate Peterson (2) and Chambers Miller (1) topped second-place Rhody, tying the two teams at 25 points and setting up a thrilling final race.
Rhode Island won the Third Varsity 8 with an 8:21.192 and Duquesne claimed the Second Varity 4, clocking in at 9:26.518. Both the 3V8 and the 2V4 are non-scoring rates.
