NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Massachusetts secured the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season title and will serve as the No. 1 overall seed entering next week’s A-10 Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Cary Street Field in Richmond, Va. The six-team, single-elimination tournament begins Thursday, May 4 and will conclude with the championship final on Sunday, May 7, all streamed live via ESPN+.
The Minutewomen wrapped up the 2023 campaign with a league-best 15-1 overall mark along with an unbeaten 9-0 record in conference competition, cementing the program’s 11th straight regular-season title and 14th overall. UMass receives a bye into the semifinals and will open championship play Friday, May 5 at noon.
In addition to Massachusetts, second-seeded Richmond (14-3) garnered an opening round bye into the semifinals as well via a notable 8-1 record against A-10 competition. The Spiders will see their first action of the championship at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
Saint Joseph’s (9-8) earned the third overall seed behind a 6-3 mark in league play and will face No. 6 St. Bonaventure (6-11, 4-5 A-10) at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 4 in the opening round; the victor will battle No. 2 Richmond in Friday’s late semifinal matchup. Davidson (11-5) slotted in as the No. 4 overall seed behind a 6-3 record within the A-10, and will square off against fifth overall George Washington (6-11, 5-4 A-10) at noon on Thursday for the right to challenge the top-seeded Minutewomen in the semifinals.
The Hawks locked down the No. 3 seed in the championship over Davidson by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker, as SJU downed the Wildcats during the regular season via a 16-15 double overtime victory on Sunday, April 16.
Additionally, the Bonnies clinched the sixth and final position within the championship over VCU by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker as well, thanks to an 15-13 road victory against the Rams on Saturday, March 11.
The winner of the Atlantic 10 Women’s Lacrosse Championship will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which opens Friday, May 12.
