NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Reigning women's tennis champion VCU secured honors as the near-unanimous front-runner heading into the 2023 campaign, per the league's annual Preseason Poll. Additionally, the conference announced the 12-woman Preseason All-Conference Team late Wednesday afternoon.
The A-10 Preseason Poll and Preseason All-Conference Team are voted on by the league's head coaches.
Four-time defending champion VCU tallied 168 total points and 12 first-place votes in the Preseason Poll, entering the year as the near-unanimous favorite. Appropriately, the Rams earned four of the Preseason All-Conference positions as 2022 All-Conference selections Gabriela Davidescu and Yelizaveta Karlova along with the sister duo of Anastasia & Victoria Smirnova all picked up the required votes.
Massachusetts followed at second in the poll, securing 141 total points. The Minutewomen also compiled a trio of Preseason All-Conference choices in 2022 A-10 Rookie of the Year Renata Farima along with second-team All-Conference picks Danielle Hack and Mariya Krasakova. Richmond checked in at third behind 131 points and the final first-place vote, capturing one Preseason All-Conference placement for Andrea Campodonico.
With 121 points, Davidson notched fourth in the poll while Fordham garnered 115 points for fifth; both programs managed a solo representative on the Preseason All-Conference Team, as Josie Schaffer – a 2022 first-team choice – clinched a spot for the 'Cats while Lindsay Hung picked up a slot for the Rams. George Washington and Saint Louis knotted up at 101 points for a tie at sixth with the former notably landing 2022 A-10 first-team pick Stella Wiesemann on the Preseason All-Conference Team as well.
Dayton slotted in at eighth with 72 points while Rhode Island (67 points) and Duquesne (61 points) trailed not far behind for ninth and 10th, respectively.
George Mason logged 49 points for 11th, locking down the final Preseason All-Conference selection in 2022 first-teamer Paige La, before St. Bonaventure (31 points) and Saint Joseph's (25 points) rounded out the poll.
The season will conclude with the 2023 Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship, set for April 27-30 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
