NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Defending regular-season Atlantic 10 baseball champion Davidson earned recognition as the preseason front-runner heading into the 2023 campaign, per the league's annual Preseason Poll announced ahead of the season's opening slate of contests set for this upcoming Friday, Feb. 17.

The A-10 Preseason Poll is voted on by the league's head coaches.

Davidson enters the season as the top overall selection in the poll by a narrow margin, securing 130 total points behind five first-place votes en route to the program's first-ever No. 1 ranking since joining the Atlantic 10. The Wildcats managed to capture the team's first A-10 regular-season title last year after compiling a 43-13 overall mark and 20-4 run in league competition, eventually advancing to the championship semifinals before faltering to VCU and Richmond in back-to-back matchups.

Two-time defending champion VCU secured distinction at second on the Preseason Poll, logging 125 total points with four first-place votes. The Rams battled into the A-10 championship final a season ago after putting together a 45-25 (19-5) record, powering past No. 6 overall Saint Joseph's as well as top-seeded Davidson before clinching the repeat title with a victory over rival Richmond in the finale.

Richmond and Saint Louis slid in for a tie at No. 3 overall in the Preseason Poll, collecting 103 points apiece with the former registering a single first-place vote. Richmond closed out last season at 30-26 with a 11-13 mark in league play, locking down the final position in the A-10 championship before embarking on an upset-ladden run to the championship final against cross-city rival VCU. SLU, meanwhile, wrapped up the year at 29-24 (14-9) en route to the third seed in last year's postseason, initially falling to SJU in the opening round before fighting back into the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.

With 92 total points and a single first-place vote, Dayton grabbed fifth in the poll after going 23-27 this past season with a 10-14 mark in league play. Rhode Island (85 points), Saint Joseph's (81 points) and George Mason (70 points, one first-place vote) scored the next three slots at sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. The Rams, Hawks and Patriots each earned position in last year's championship, with Rhody securing fourth overall followed by Mason at the No. 5 seed and SJU in the sixth position.

Fordham (52 points) and George Washington (51 points) slotted in at the ninth and 10th, respectively, while Massachusetts (27 points) and St. Bonaventure (17 points) rounded out the poll.

The 2023 A-10 Baseball season launches on Friday, Feb. 17 with 10 of the 12 programs getting underway during the opening weekend. Conference play begins on Friday, March 31 before the league concludes the campaign with the 2023 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship, set for May 23-27 at The Diamond in Richmond, Va and hosted by VCU.
