NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Duquesne junior Haley Scholer and freshman Lexi Sundgren its Women's Swimming and Diving Performer and Rookie Performer of the Week. On the men's side, George Mason sophomore Tate Anderson and freshman Alex Crown garnered Men's Performer and Rookie Performer, respectively. The awards, announced Tuesday, are for meets held Oct. 23-29.
Scholer picked up a trio of individual championships at the A-10 Classic over the course of three sessions, including the 200-yard IM as well as the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke. In the 200-yard IM to open action in the first day of competition Friday, Scholer touched the wall at 2:017.16. The next morning, Scholer won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.04 seconds. The Jamison, Pa., native, completed the triumvirate of titles in the afternoon session Saturday by closing at 2:03.28 to finish first in the 200-yard backstroke.
Hailing from Pittsburgh, Sundgren tied for first in the 500-yard freestyle with teammate Orla Egan with a time of 5:05.60 before winning gold in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:53.63. Both Scholer and Sundgren were also part of Duquesne's 200-yard medley relay team that placed second with a time of 1:46.48 as well as the 400-yard medley relay that claimed silver at 3:53.62. Scholer swam the opening leg of each relay, with Sundgren serving as the anchor for both. The performances by Scholer and Sundgren helped the Dukes earn a 214-138 win over La Salle and a 188-164 triumph over George Mason to win the A-10 Classic championship.
Anderson won three individual events and was part of four relay wins to propel the Patriots to a 203-142 victory over La Salle at the two-day A-10 Classic at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va. Anderson, a Fuquay-Varina, N.C., native, took the top spot in the 100-yard backstroke (50.80), 200-yard backstroke (1:51.70) and 200-yard IM. He also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (51.04). Anderson helped the Patriots win the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.40), 400-yard freestyle relay (3:06.60), 200-yard medley relay (1:31.83) and 400-yard medley relay (3:23.30).
Crown, a product of Gainesville, Va., won both the 500-yard freestyle (4:36.72) and 400-yard IM (4:07.06) and placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.81) in Mason's 203-142 victory over La Salle at the two-day A-10 Classic at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va.
