DAVIDSON, N.C. – Bolsterd by joint eight RBI from Atlantic 10 All-Conference selections Will Carlone and Tyler Locklear, second-seeded VCU (39-18, 19-5 A-10) earned the Rams an opportunity to defend their title in Saturday's A-10 Championship Final, vanquishing No. 1 overall Davidson (43-12, 20-4 A-10) in the first semifinal via a decisive 14-6 margin late Friday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Victory in hand, the Rams secure the advantageous position of coming out of the winner's bracket heading into Saturday's Championship Final, battling the winner of Friday's nightcap between top-seeded Davidson and No. 7 Richmond, first pitch slated for noon. Both contests will be broadcast live via ESPN+.
Locklear got things started early on for VCU, belting a three-run homer late in the third. Jacob Selden followed up with solo jack of his own in the fourth.
The Rams continued to pour it on just an inning later, adding a combined three runs on two-RBI single from Carlone along with a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Selden. Logan Amiss plated one more in the sixth via a sac fly, solidifying an 8-0 edge for VCU.
Davidson finally responded in the seventh, registering three runs on a pair of dingers from A-10 Player of the Year Michael Carico and second-team choice Jacob Hinderleider. During the Rams' chance in the bottom of the frame, Carlone logged his third and fourth RBI of the day, jacking a two-run four-bagger to dead-on center field.
The 'Cats tacked on two more during the eighth, both coming on RBI singles from Carico and fellow A-10 first-teamer Parker Nolan, narrowing the deficit to a 10-5 mark. VCU also composed a productive inning, registering the team's final four runs on a pair of RBI single, a RBI groundout and a RBI fielder's choice.
The final score of the contest proved unique, as a wild pitch on a swinging strikeout allowed Joe Haney to safetly reach first and Hinderleider cruise on home, cementing the 14-6 decision in favor of VCU.
