DAVIDSON, N.C. – Powered by a Cody Jansen go-ahead grand slam along with a pair of Mark Vierling long balls, third-seeded Saint Louis (29-23, 14-9 A-10) rallied to a revenge victory against No. 6 overall Saint Joseph's (29-25, 12-11 A-10) in a back-and-forth elimination contest to open day three at Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship, knocking out the Hawks behind an offensively-driven 10-5 decision early Thursday afternoon at Davidson's Wilson Field.
With the win, the Billikens stave off elimination and head into the consolation bracket's quarterfinals, hosting the victor between No. 5 George Mason and seventh-seeded Richmond in Thursday evening's nightcap. The contest will be broadcast live via ESPN+.
The early-going drifted entirely towards Saint Joseph's, as A-10 second-team selection Andrew Cossetti initially pushed the Hawks to a quick edge in the second inning behind a straight on solo shot over the center-field fence; the senior followed that up with an RBI double in the fourth before Brendan Hueth escorted him home on an RBI single up the middle, lifting SJU to a 3-0 lead.
The Hawks concluded their unanswered streak with one more run in the fifth via Hueth RBI fielder's choice.
Trailing by four, Saint Louis proceeded to respond with some power, intially plating one via a sixth-inning solo bomb from Vierling before, in a proverbial turning point for the matchup, the Billikens grabbed the lead in the seventh behind a five-run swing. A bases-loaded RBI walk pulled the deficit to within two before Jansen blew things open with his grand slam, rocketing SLU to its first advantage of the day, 6-4.
The bottom of the frame featured another Cossetti dinger, narrowing the gap back to just one, but Saint Louis answered back with four more scores in the eighth; Cole Smith started things off with a sac fly before Vierling jacked his second homer of the contest, this time adding three runs to the scoreboard as the Billikens secured a comfortable 10-5 edge.
Saint Joseph's junior Brandon Drapeau drilled one final round-tripper for the Hawks in the eighth, cementing the eventual 10-6 final in favor of Saint Louis.
