NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference tabbed Saint Louis junior Cam Redding as well as VCU redshirt sophomore Tyler Locklear as the league’s Baseball Co-Players of the Week. Additionally, George Mason sophomore Ryan Peterson earned recognition as the Pitcher of the Week while Rhode Island freshman Anthony DePino garnered his third-ever Rookie honors. The awards were announced Monday following the conclusion of the 12th week of contests played May 9-15.
Redding, a designated hitter out of Wilmette, Ill., compiled a monumental week for Saint Louis despite the Billikens dropping a tough 2-1 series at Rhode Island, posting a .786 batting average with 11 hits – including three home runs and one double – for nine RBI and eight runs scored, good for a 2.312 OPS. The junior began the weekend with a perfect 3-for-3 and a home run, scoring three himself and driving in a pair during the series opener on Friday. Redding followed up with another three-hit day on Saturday, adding another long ball with a trio of RBI and as many runs scored. In the series finale, he notched a new season-highs five hits and four RBI, concluding with 5-for-5 line with two runs scored himself.
Hailing from Abingdon, Md., Locklear put together a monster week at the plate for VCU, pacing the Rams to a perfect 4-0 record on the week with an initial victory over Old Dominion leading into a sweep A-10 foe Massachusetts. The redshirt sophomore slashed .647/.714/.1.294 with 12 RBI and 10 runs scored generated behind 11 hits, two doubles, three dingers, two walks, two hit-by-pitches and a stolen base. In the first two games against the Minutemen, Locklear composed a perfect 9-for-9 as the Rams routed UMass by a combined 39 runs. The All-American racked up a career-high five runs scored in Friday's win before matching a career best just a day later with six RBI in Saturday's victory.
Peterson, a native of Orchard Park, N.Y., tossed a complete game to wrap up George Mason’s series sweep of rival George Washington in Sunday’s weekend finale, setting down eight batters on strikes while surrendering just three hits for zero runs. The sophomore southpaw retired 16 of the first 17 batters faced and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a one-out single, giving up just two total walks on the day en route to his first-ever collegiate complete game.
DePino, a product of Madison, Conn., batted .417 for the week, helping lead Rhode Island to a key series win against Saint Louis. Notably, the freshman knocked home the game-winning RBI single in URI's walk-off victory on Friday before finishing the weekend with a combined five hits, four walks, five runs scored and four RBI, all good a 1.395 OPS.
