GENEVA, Ohio – George Washington women’s swimming won its second Atlantic 10 Women's Swimming Championship, Saturday at the SPIRE Institute. The Colonials closed the final day with 701.5 points.
Duquesne placed second with 509 points, followed by Richmond with 487 points. Fordham finished fourth with 416.5 points, while Davidson placed fifth with 406 points and George Mason was sisxth with a total of 338.5. Massachusetts (278), St. Bonaventure (202.5), La Salle (170), Saint Louis (130) and Rhode Island (72) rounded out the field.
GW earned a total of 16 medals through the four-day meet, eight silver, six bronze, and two gold. George Washington senior Erin McCarthy, finished first in the 1,650-yard freestyle on Saturday with a time of 16:33.25, followed by Fordham junior Clare Culver in second place (16:39.94), and GW freshman, Molly Smyers in third place (16:48.91), respectively. The Colonials took silver in the 400-yard relay, with a time of 3:21.48 (Barbara Schaal, Grace Olivardia, Erin McCarthy, and Marlee Rickert).
Davidson's Shelby Stanley was named the Women's Most Outstanding Swimming Performer, breaking conference records in both the 200-yard IM (1:57.89) and the 100-yard fly (52.94). She won the 200-yard butterfly Saturday in 1:59.35, just shy of the A-10 record. It was her third medal of the meet.
Ali Tyler of George Mason was named Most Outstanding Rookie Performer, for her performance in the 50-yard free (22.32), the 100-yard back (53.13), and the record breaking 400-yard medley relay (Jacquee Clabeaux, Abigail Murtaugh, and Emma De Jong).
Phoebe Shaya of La Salle, who earned gold in the 1-meter dive with 265.60 points was named the Most Outstanding Women's Diver. Annica Valmassei captured gold in the 3-meter dive a score of 262.50. La Salle diving coach Ian Forlini was the Women's Diving Coach of the Year.
Duquesne's Mendy De Rooi recorded a 49.28 to earn the 100-yard free gold medal. Ali Tyler of George Mason stamped a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 15:55.51. GW freshman Barbara Schaal took second-place (1:56.54), and freshman Haley Scholer of Duquesne placed third (1:56.71). Fordham senior, Becky Kamau took gold for the Rams in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:12.05.
George Mason took gold in the 400-yard free relay (Ali Tyler, Jacquee Clabeaux, Shannon Judge, and Emma De Jong), with a time of 3:20.30.
