GW Remains Atop Men's and Women's Leaderboard After Day 3 of Swimming & Diving Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – George Washington maintained its lead on both the men’s and women’s leaderboards following the conclusion of the third day of competition at the 2022 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships at the SPIRE Institute.
 
The Colonials held onto the lead with 586.5 points, well ahead of second-place Massachusetts back at 330.5 points. St. Bonaventure is in third with 324 points while George Mason slid in to fourth with 313. Davidson completed the top five team rankings with 264.5 points.
 
George Washington won early in back-to-back men's events, with Marek Osina taking gold in the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:46.40, and Durde Matic winning the 100-yard fly with a meet record time of 45.79, along with his teammates Ethan Tulenko (47.88), and Dylan Koo (48.06), placing second and third, respectively.
 
Davidson’s Ben McClain earned a gold medal for the Wildcats in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:37.95. GW’s Josh Legge placed second with a time of 1:38.39. UMass sophomore Jack Artist placed first in the 100-yard breast with a time of 54.68, followed by GW junior Tyler Kawakami in second place with a time of 54.68. GW’s Karol Mlynarczyk clocked a first-place finish in the 100-yard back with a time of 47.46, earning a gold medal for the Colonials. GW grasped their final gold medal of the evening in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:10.45 (Marek Osina, Tyler Kawakami, Durde Matic, and Karol Mlynarczyk).
 
GW increased its lead on the women's leaderboard as well by finishing with 486 points Friday, followed by second-place Duquesne with 355 points. Richmond is in third with 330 while Davidson (309) and Fordham (300.5) round out the top five.
 
Freshman Ainhoa Martin of Fordham won the 400-yard individual medley with a 4:13.27, breaking a conference meet record. Duquesne junior Emma Menzer placed second in the event with a time of 4:13.74. Duquesne's Hanna Everhart took home a gold medal in the 200-yard free, stamping a time of 1:48.16, claiming another victory for the Dukes. Ali Tyler of George Mason earned the Patriots a gold medal victory with a win in the 100-yard backstroke at 53.13. Mason’s final win was in the 400-yard medley relay with the team of Ali Tyler, Jacquee Clabeaux, Abigail Murtaugh, and Emma De Jong. Their time of 3:37.99 broke both the conference and meet record, in addition to the pool record. 

Davidson's Shelby Stanley won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 52.94, crushing the record for both the meet as well as the conference in general, plus the pool record as well. George Mason's Jacquee Clabeaux won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.16, claiming both the conference, meet and pool record along the way. Annica Valmassei of Davidson earned a gold medal in the 3-meter diving with a score of 262.50
 
The four-day event concludes tomorrow with the crowning of the women's and men's champions. Preliminaries start at 10:00 a.m. and with finals beginning at 6:00 p.m.
