George Washington Maintains Solid Lead After Day 2 Of Swimming & Diving Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – George Washington maintains a solid lead on both men’s and women’s leaderboard after the second day of the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships at the SPIRE Institute.

The GW men maintained a commanding lead, tallying 305 points to push ahead of second-place St. Bonaventure’s 210 points. UMass placed third with 167 points, followed by George Mason (165), Davidson (141.5), La Salle (118), Fordham (106.5), and Saint Louis (83), respectively. 
 
The Colonials won gold medals in every Thursday men's event, setting the tone early in the 500-yard free, led by freshman Connor Rodgers with a time of 4:24.11. Senior Marek Osina earned GW another first-place finish in the men's 200-yard IM with a time of 1:44.72. His time broke both the conference and meet record, and was also a NCAA qualifying time. The gold medals continued for the Colonials in the 50-yard free, led by Durde Matic. His time of 19.56 broke both the conference and meet records, in addition to the pool record. His performance qualified under NCAA B standards.

The GW men earned another gold medal in the 200-yard free relay (Durde Matic, Dylan Koo, Karol Mlynarczyk, and Tyler Kawakami) with a time of 1:19.36. George Mason placed second with a time of 1:19.51 (Zane Roberts, Alexander Franklin, Josh Fletcher, and Will Rastatter).

The Colonials recorded 241 points in the women's swimming championship maintaining their day 1 lead ahead of Richmond’s 197 points. Davidson secured third with 177 points, followed by Duquesne (165), Fordham (158.5), UMass (126), George Mason (99), St. Bonaventure (95.5), La Salle (76), Saint Louis (71), and Rhode Island (42), respectively. 

GW’s women's team held on to hold their lead capturing gold in the 500-yard free. Erin McCarhy won the women's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:48.47. The Wildcats' Shelby Stanley finished the 200-yard IM, placing first with a time of 1:57.89 and breaking both the conference and meet record, in addition to the pool record. Ali Tyler of George Mason secured a gold medal for the patriots, finishing first in the 50-yard free with a time of 22.32. 

Abby Fuller, Lauren Medlin, Lucy Yeomans, and Margaret Purcell anchored the Davidson relay team taking first in the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 1:31.37. 
 
St. Bonaventure’s Zyad Morsy won the men's 1-meter diving competition with a final score of 293.50. Senior Steven Stasolla placed second with a final score of 286.15.

Championships will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00 am with preliminaries followed by finals at 6:30 pm.
