Rhode Island Wins A-10 Rowing Championship; 21 Honored with League Awards

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. — Rhode Island won all three scoring events to tally 54 total points and win its third straight Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship Saturday at Cooper River Park.
 
Claiming their eighth A-10 title overall, the Rams receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships, which will take place May 28-30 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
 
George Washington finished with 47 points to place second, finishing in second place in both the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8, and third in the Varsity 4. Massachusetts was third with 38 points, finishing second in the Varsity 4 and fourth in the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8.15051
 
Saint Joseph's was fourth with 33 points, followed by Dayton in fifth with 30 and Fordham in sixth with 24. Duquesne, George Mason and La Salle placed seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
 
Rhody won a close Varsity 8 with a time of 6:48.910, edging our second-place GW, which finished in 6:53.192. The Rams had taken strong lead at the start, but GW and Dayton closed the gap to tighten it at the finish. Dayton placed third at 6:57.588.
The top five spots all finished in the span of just over 10 seconds, providing for a thrilling final race, including UMass edging SJU by ,228 for fourth place.
 
Rhode Island win in the Second Varsity 8 came at 7:09.908, followed by George Washington in second place at 7:14.996 and Saint Joseph's in third at 7:19.262.
 
In the Varsity Four, the URI clocked into first at 8:13.059, with UMass in second at 8:15.987 and George Washington third at 8:20.033.
 
Shelagh Donohoe won her seventh Coach of the Year Award for leading Rhody to the title. The league honored Donohor and 20 All-Conference student-athletes (listed below) at the conclusion of the championship.
