May, Dayton Surge to Front in A-10 Golf Championship Opening Round

ORLANDO – Henry May shot an opening-round 67 to build a three-stroke lead and help Dayton take first place by eight strokes on the first day of the 2021 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship at Reunion Resort and Golf Club.

The Flyers carded a 285, with three top-ten finishes, including May's five-under par. May had seven birdies and was three under cumulatively on par 4 holes and two under on par fives. Connor Quigly shot a one-under 71 to tie for fourth overall and place second for UD, which Kyle Schmidt was tied for sixth with an even 72. Ryan Clements was Dayton's fourth scorer, carding a 75 to tie for 17th.

UD leads second-place Rhode Island, which finished the first round with a 293 and three top-ten finishes as well. Jordan Brajcich tied for second with a 70 and Chris Francoeur hit a 71 to tie for fourth. Bryson Richards' 74 put him into a tie for 10th.

Davidson tallied a 296 and placed third behind a 70 from Alex Heffner, who tied for second, and Clayton Tribus' ninth-place finish with a 73. George Mason was fourth with a 299 and a top-ten showing by Nikita Gubenko and Florian Blatti who respectively carded a 72 to tie for sixth, and a 74 to tie for 10th. VCU also tied for fourth with a 299, and Sachin Kumar and Peter Gasperini each shot a 74 to join the tie for 10th place.

That 10th place tie included six players, with Jack Geise of St. Bonaventure, Ben Cooper of Richmond and David Kim of La Salle all finishing with a 74.

Richmond was sixth with a 300, followed by St. Bonaventure and George Washington who tied for seventh with a 303. GW's Hugo Riboud was a top-ten finisher with a 72. Fordham and La Salle rounded out the field with a 312 and 313 respectively.

The second round begins Saturday at 10:30 am, and the final round will be played Sunday at 8:50 am.
