George Washington Wins Fourth Atlantic 10 Men's Swimming & Diving Title

GENEVA, Ohio – George Washington won its fourth Atlantic 10 Men's Swimming and Diving Championship Saturday, recording 828.5 points to win by 264.5 points in the four-day championship at SPIRE Institute.
 
The Colonials entered the day with a commanding lead, and won five of six events Saturday to secure their fourth title in the last five years. GW won 21 medals during the four days, 14 of which were gold. Colonials' Brian Thomas earned his second A-10 Men's Swimming Coach of the Year.
 
George Mason placed second with 564 points, Davidson was third with 503.5 and Massachusetts finished in fourth with 468.5 points. St. Bonaventure was fifth with 457 points. La Salle and Saint Louis filled out the seven-team field.
 
George Washington freshman Karol Mlynarczyk won three golds and accumulated 60 points, more than any other swimmer to earn both the Most Outstanding Swimmer and Most Outstanding Rookie honors. Mlynarczyk won the 100-yard backstroke, the 200-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly while also serving as part of three gold-medal winning GW relay teams.
 
GW's Emils Pone and La Salle's Zack Wolbert set the pool, meet and conference records in the 200-yard butterfly. Pone finished first with a 1:45.19 and Wolbert was second with 1:45.23, times the bested the league and championship record of 1:45.83 and the pool mark of 1:45.78.
 
Michael Bruno of St. Bonaventure, who won the 3-meter dive with a score of 292.75, was named the Most Outstanding Men's Diver. Bruno also placed fourth in the 1-meter dive with a score of 305.70. Bonnies diving coach Stephanie Fleming was the Men's Diving Coach of the Year. SBU had two divers finish in the top eight of each event in the diving portion of the A-10 Championship, which was held at George Mason's Aquatic Center on Thursday and Friday.
 
Massachusetts Tyler Pidde won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:28.61 in the first of Friday's finals. Mlynarczyk won the 200-yard backstroke Saturday with a 1:43.04, while GW's Tyler Kawakami took gold in the 100-yard freestyle with a 44.18. Marek Osina grabbed gold in the 200-yard breaststroke for the Colonials with a 1:56.93. The George Washington 400-yard freestyle relay team of Mlynarczyk, Osina, Pone and Kawakami earned a gold in the final event of the night with a 2:55.68.
