GENEVA, Ohio – George Washington's men's swimming team took over the lead following the second day of the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships, while Richmond grabbed the lead in the women's side after Thursday's second day of competition at the SPIRE Institute.
The GW men took a commanding lead, tallying 274 points to pull ahead of second-place George Mason's 195 points. St. Bonaventure is third with 189 points, UMass fourth with 180 and Davidson, the leader after day 1, recorded 179 points to place fifth
The Spiders recorded 247.5 points in the women's swimming championship to pass day-one leader Davidson's 237 points. Duquesne is third with 173.5 points and GW is fourth with 154. La Salle rounds out the top five team finishes on the women's side with 132 points.
The A-10 Diving Championships, normally held in conjunction with the Swimming Championship, was held at George Mason's Aquatic and Fitness Center in Fairfax, Va. Scores from the diving events were incorporated into the team scores at swimming.
GW's leap to the front of the field in the men's championship was thanks in part to record-breaking performances by Marek Osina and Emils Pone in the 200-yard individual medley. Osina set the overall league record and the A-10 championship record with a 1:45.18 to take gold. Pone won silver with a 1:45.43 time, which also eclipsed the previous record.
GW won gold medals in every other Thursday men's event. The Colonials took the men's 500-yard freestyle, thanks to a winning time of 4:27.75, and earned another first-place finish in the men's 50-yard freestyle from Tyler Kawakami, who finished in 19.97 seconds. GW won the 200-yard freestyle relay behind Karol Mlynarczak, Ethan Tulenko, Dylan Koo and Tyler Kawakami's time of 1:20.58.
La Salle's Sam Henninger won the men's 1-meter diving competition with a final score of 314.50. There were four divers over 300 points in the 1-meter dive, Henninger, Daniel Valmassei of Davidson (312.60 points), La Salle's Steven Stasolla (310.10) and St. Bonaventure's Michael Bruno (309.95)
Davidson's women's team attempted to hold its lead n the field by capturing gold in three of the four events. Siena Senn won the women's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:49.00. The Wildcats' Abby Francis finished the 50-yard freestyle in 23:19 to finish first. Julia Goodhead, Abby Francis, Shelby Stanley and Martha Tripsa anchored the Davidson relay team that took first in the 200-yard freestyle. Margaret Purcell scored Richmond's only Thursday event win, finishing the 200-yard medley in 2:00.17. However, Richmond had two top-five finishes in both the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley to outscore Davidson as a team.
George Mason took the top two spots in the women's 3-meter diving, with Marina Toone (315.05) and Hailey Fisher (301.20) placing 1-2. George Washington's Jamie Doak was third with a score 284.60 .
The Swimming and Diving Championships resume Friday at both SPIRE and George Mason.
