NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Davidson senior Ruben Fontes as A-10 Baseball Player of the Week, while Fordham senior Matt Mikulski repeated as Pitcher of the Week. Richmond freshman Jared Sprague-Lott was chosen as the Rookie of the Week. The awards, presented by BioSteel, were announced Monday and are for games played April 5-11.
Fontes hit .385 (5-for-13) with three home runs and five RBI as the Wildcats went 3-1 against Dayton on A-10's opening weekend. The outfielder/designated hitter from Bonita, Calif., posted an on-base percentage of .500 and slugged 1.154, scoring four runs in the four games. He homered in three straight games, including the go-ahead solo shot in Saturday's 12-9 win.
Mikulski had another superb performance on Saturday against St. Bonaventure, improving to 5-0 on the season. The southpaw from Mohegan Lake, N.Y., tossed his second consecutive complete game shutout, a seven-inning one-hit gem in which he allowed just three baserunners overall while striking out a career-high 16 batters, his fourth straight start with double-digit strikeouts. Mikulski also extended his scoreless innings streak to 16.2 innings.
Sprague-Lott was unstoppable at the plate, slashing .889/.923/1.222 in a three-game sweep of Towson, batting a nearly perfect 8-for-9 in the series. The infielder from Philadelphia, went 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored while drawing two walks in the series opener. He then added a 3-for-3 performance in the nightcap of the twinbill, driving in two and scoring twice. Sprague-Lott capped the series with a 3-for-4 performance with his first career home run and drove in a career-high five runs in the victory.
