NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named George Washington senior Ioanna Mantzouratos its Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week, while Massachusetts senior Lauren Hiller was named Defensive Player of the Week. VCU freshman Kelsey McDonnel was named Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Tuesday and presented by Biosteel, are for games played March 8-14.
Mantzouratos tied her career-high with five goals in a 17-16 road win at American last Wednesday while setting a career-high by firing nine shots on goal. The attacker from Germantown, Md., also netted three goals and one assist, pacing the Buff and Blue in scoring for the second consecutive game, an 11-10 overtime win at Longwood. Mantzouratos has scored at least one goal in each of GW's games so far this season and leads the team in goals scored (10).
In a pair of wins last week for the Minutewomen, Hiller made a combined 13 saves. First, against UMass-Lowell, the North Andover, Mass., native collected a pair of saves in the opening frame, while allowing two goals and picking up one ground ball. The veteran goalie then made a season-high 11 saves and collected five ground balls in an overtime win against UConn.
McDonnell led the Rams in scoring, finding the back of the net three times in a 14-12 loss to Furman last week. The Yorktown Heights, N.Y., native fired off nine shots, including six on target to keep VCU in the game.
