NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Davidson junior Trevor Candelaria its Baseball Player of the Week, while teammate, junior Gabe Levy earned Pitcher of the Week. La Salle's Frank Elissalt was named Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Monday and presented by Biosteel, are for all games played to opening the 2021 season.

Candelaria leads Davidson with .444 average, 1.000 slugging and .565 on-base percentage and with four doubles. The outfielder from Durango, Colo., hit the game-winning two-run homerun Sunday to lift the Wildcats to a 16-14, 11-inning win over Toledo and complete the series sweep. Candelaria also homered at NC State (Feb. 21).

Levy, a right-handed pitcher from Seattle, Wash., is 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA and a save in nine innings pitched without giving up a walk. Levy came on in the season opener against Morehead State and earned a 3.1-inning save, allowing one hit and striking out four. He started Feb. 27 against Toledo and went 5.2 innings pitched with four hits, seven strikeouts, and one earned run.

Elissalt made quite an impression in his collegiate debut against Hofstra on Friday. The right-hander from Miami piled up 11 strikeouts and allowed just two runs on three hits over 6.0 innings pitched in a no decision. It's the most strikeouts by an Explorer in the modern stat era dating back to the early 2000s.
