George Washington's Women's Team Leads, While Colonials and Patriots Men's Teams Tie For Top Spot After Day 1 of Swimming and Diving Championship

GENEVA, Oh.- The George Mason Patriots and George Washington Colonials are currently tied for first place atop the men’s leaderboard, while the Colonials also lead on the women’s side after day one of the 2020 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championship at Spire Institute. 

The Patriots and Colonials both racked up 74 points, followed by La Salle at 62. Massachusetts (56) sits in fourth place, followed by Davidson (54), Saint Louis (54), St. Bonaventure (54), and Fordham (44).

Mason’s men’s team took the lead early with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (Logan Eubanks, Chris Stankiewicz, Devin Truong, and Will Rastatter) with a time of 1:27.20. The Patriots also earned a second place finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay (Drake Moretz, Ryan Donnelly, Nick Ashton, and Attila Kiss) touching the wall at 6:32.86. 

GW, the reigning 2019 champions, claimed first place in the 800-yard freestyle relay (Moritz Fath, Youssef Ragab, Tyler Kawakami, and Haoning Chen) clocking in at 6:30.20. The Colonials also came in second place in the 200-yard medley relay (Andrew Cho, George Aspougalis, Tyler Kawakami, and Haoning Chen) with a time of 1:27.95. 

The GW women’s team tallied 106 points on the first day of competition and are followed by Duquesne with 94. Massachusetts (77) is currently in third, followed by Richmond (73), Davidson (67), St. Bonaventure (64), Fordham (62), George Mason (57), Saint Louis (40), La Salle (36), and Rhode Island (27). 

The Colonials took the top spot in the 200-yard medley relay (Andrea Ho, Stine Petersen, Meghan Burton, and Rebecca Smolcic) finishing with a time of 1:39.49. George Washington also earned 36 points through the 1-meter dive after Caitlin Inall, Rachel Dickinson, and Gabriella Arendes finished in sixth, seventh, and eighth place respectively. 

Duquesne finished first in the 800-yard freestyle relay (Emma Brinton, Carson Gross, Lauren Devorace, and Hanna Everhart) with a time of 7:15.54.

Maja Boric of Massachusetts took the top spot in the women's 1-meter dive with a final score of 281.8. 

The championships resume tomorrow morning with the preliminary events beginning at 10:00 am followed by finals at 6:30 pm.
