BRONX, N.Y. - After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, top-seeded Rhode Island advanced to the final of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship, edging host Fordham, 7-6 in penalty kicks. The game ended in a scoreless draw after two overtimes. Rhode Island will face the winner of No. 2 VCU/No. 3 Dayton on Sunday at Noon.
Rhody senior Simon Trcka nailed the final penalty kick past a diving Konstantin Weis to advance in the championship, 7-6. Weis made a pair of saves in the shootout, while Stefan Schmidt, in goal for Rhode Island, and also attemped a penalty kick himself, registered three saves in the faceoff.
Rhode Island (13-3-3) applied pressure throughout the entire 110 minutes, outshooting Fordham 17-11, and also held the advantage is corners, 10-4. Weis made four saves during the game, including a couple of diving efforts to keep the score even.
The 13 goals in a shootout was the deepest in A-10 Men's Soccer Championship history, with the previous tally going 5-4 (nine goals) on multiple occasions.
URI came close to breaking the deadlock in the 43rd minute when Ludvik Benco fired a shot on goal that Weis managed to tip just over the crossbar.
Still scoreless early in the second half, Fordham nearly got on the board in the 51st minute when Tomer Zloczower drilled a shot off the crossbar.
Benco had another look at an open net with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, as Weis was unable to corral the rebound on a shot by Edvin Akselsen, but Benco's attempt sailed over the crossbar.
With the score still knotted after two overtime periods, the teams headed to a penalty kick shootout to decide who would advance to Sunday's title game.
Fordham finished its season, 7-10-3 with the draw.
