PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The third-seeded Richmond Spiders (13-5) held of the sixth-seeded La Salle Explorers (7-11) in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Lacrosse. With the win, the Spiders advance to the semifinals and will face No. 2 Saint Joseph's on Friday at 3:30 pm.
A-10 Rookie of the Year, Sam Geiersbach got the scoring started for the Spiders, converting on a free position shot. It was the 56th goal of the season for the freshman. The Explorers answered back with a pair of goals to go up 2-1 as Toni Massetti and Courtney Wooldford found the back of the net.
With just seconds remaining in the first half, Allee Ilgenfritz gave the Explorers a one goal lead to take a 6-5 edge at the break. The goal, unasssisted, was the 53rd on the season for the senior.
The Spiders exploded offensively in the first part of the the second period as Kim Egizi found the back of the net for the third time in the game, while Marissa Brown added her first and Geiersbach scored back-to-back times, putting UR up 9-7.
The two teams would trade goals in the final 15 minutes, with Ilgenfritz cutting it to just a one goal lead with two minutes remaining. Geiersbach sealed the victory with 46 seconds remaining with her 60th goal of the season.
Richmond's Megan Gianforte registered 11 saves on 22 shots, while Lucy Loughlin and Lynne Frankel split time in goal for La Salle, totalling 10 saves on 23 shots.
The Spiders held the advantage on draws in the first half 9-2, but were equalized in the second frame as each team tallied seven.
The Spiders will face No. 2 Saint Joseph's in Saturday's 3:30 pm semifinal. UR edged Saint Joseph's 12-11 in the last week of April.
