PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The fifth-seeded Davidson Wildcats (8-9) scored nine of the final eleven goals to finish the game, completing the comeback against No. 4 George Mason to earn a spot in Saturday's semifinals of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship, held at Saint Joseph's Sweeney Field. With the win, the Wildcats will face the top-seeded Massachusetts Minutewomen tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
The Wildcats got on the board first as Nicole Pettiglio scored her 30th goal of the season, assisted by Christine Molinari. Just two minutes later, Mason's Jordan Sdanowich tied up the game at one a piece.
George Mason scored in bunches throughout the first two-thirds game, keeping the Wildcats at bay. Davidson picked up the pace defensively to slow down the Patriots, and fueled the 'Cats comeback.
Down 11-5, Davidson rattled off seven of eight goals, capped by Annie Brockett's fourth goal of the game, to tie it at 12 with just four minutes remaining. The 'Cats then took a one goal lead off the stick of Sarah Kopp.
With less than than two minutes in the game, the Patriots' Alexa McGovern took a pass from Chachi Kelehan to again even the score at 13, her 53rd on the season, before Brockett put the 'Cats ahead again for good, on an unassisted goal.
Brockett led all scorers with five goals, followed by George Mason's Alexa McGovern who tallied four goals. The 'Cats were able to convert on 50 percent of their free-position attempts, while George Mason converted just one in four attempts.
Davidson's Rose Woolson collected 12 saves on 25 shots, while Melissa Semkiw made four saves on 18 shots.
It was the first A-10 Championship win for Davidson since joining the league, while George Mason saw its season end at 11-7. UMass defeated Davidson in their only meeting this season, 16-6.
