FAIRFAX, Va. -- The sixth-seeded George Mason Patriots stay alive in the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship with a 4-0 win over fifth-seeded Saint Louis on Friday afternoon at the George Mason Softball Complex in Fairfax, Va.
George Mason (22-32) advances to face third-seeded Saint Joseph's who lost earlier in the afternoon to Massachusetts. First pitch between the Hawks and Patriots is set for Saturday at 3:30pm. Saint Louis was eliminated from the tournament, ending their season with a 25-25 overall record.
Marina Vitalich (14-11) earned the win for the Patriots with a seven inning shutout performance, allowing just two hits while striking out five. She has now only allowed two runs in 13 innings of work during the championship.
Kaylea Chappele (7-10) pitched 6.1 innings in the loss alowing five hits on four runs, all of which were earned. Maddie Baalman came in relief for the Billikens, facing five batters to close out the game.
The Patriots followed their trend of late inning rallys to get on the board, scoring all four of their runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Erin Calpin led George Mason on offensive going 3-for-2, scoring twice and tacking on an RBI.
Katherine Marsh drove in Mason's first run of the day in the top of the fifth with a hard hit single up the right field line. Brooke Sullivan kept the hot streak alive in the sixth, leading off with a singles to center field, she advanced to second on a wild pitch and would eventually make it around to home off a double to left center from Calpin. After a walk to load the bases Samantha Zaccari and Victoria Webster drew walks to bring in two more runs, sealing the win for George Mason.
