FAIRFAX, Va. -- The second-seeded Massachusetts Minutewomen are moving on to the Atlantic 10 Softball Championship Semifinals with a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's on Friday afternoon at the George Mason Softball Complex in Fairfax, Va.
Massachusetts (27-22) advances to face the top-seeded Fordham Rams on Saturday, first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The Hawks (24-27) fell into the consolation bracket and will play the winner of Friday's third game between fifth-seeded Saint Louis and sixth-seeded George Mason at 3:30 pm on Saturday.
Meg Colleran (18-12) takes the win for the Minutewomen with a stellar performance on the rubber. The junior threw a complete seven inning game allowing just five hits on one run with two walks, adding seven strikeouts.
Ashley Ventura (14-13) took the loss for Saint Joseph's, throwing six innings of work allowing three hits and two runs (each earned), while striking out two.
Massachusetts scored its two runs in the bottom of the second as Tara Klee hit a hard single to center field getting on base first for UMass. Ashton Wince then got on base and advanced to second off an error.. Madison Gimple singled to center field advancing to second on the throw, scoring both Klee and Wince.
Saint Joseph's answered in the top of the third with one run as Caela Abadie had a fly to center field scoring Jancarla Herrera. The tying run was on third but the Hawks were unable to plate her.
Gimpl was the offensive power UMass needed as she was 1-for-2 with two RBI on the day.
