FAIRFAX, Va. – Saint Joseph's Sarah Ostaszewski had a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to propel the Hawks to the second day of competition at the 2017 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship. It was a back and forth fielding battle as the teams combined for 17 hits, but only five runs at the George Mason Softball Complex.
The Hawks (24-26) advance to face No. 2 Massachusetts in the winner's bracket on Thursday. The Patriots (21-32) fell into the consolation bracket at will play at 5:30 pm Wednesday night against Dayton who lost in the first game of the championship to Saint Louis.
Madison Clark (8-7) threw three complete innings for the Hawks, facing 13 batters striking out one while allowing no runs. She came in for Ashley Ventura in relief,who pitched the first four innings allowing two earned runs, while striking out three.
Marina Vitalich (13-12) took the loss for George Mason, throwing six complete innings, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out seven. Bekah Ansbro also threw for the Patriots facing two batters in the bottom of the seventh, giving up the game winning single.
Ostaszewski and Madeline Brunck led Saint Joseph's with two hits apiece. Ostazewski was 2-for-4 with one RBI which came from her game winning single.
George Mason came out strong, opening the game with two runs scored in the top of the first. Brooke Sullivan led off the game with a walk and then she beat the throw to second on a hard hit ball by Sydnee Wells. With two runners on and no outs, Jess Middleton singled to center, loading the bases. Erin Calpin hit a grounder up the middle to bring home Sullivan and Wells.
Saint Joseph's came back and tied it 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth. The Hawks loaded the bases with no outs and scored their first run on a wild pitch. A Mason fielding error brought home the other run of the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh Ostaszewski answered with her hard hit single to the right field corner, sealing the win for the Hawks.
