NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fordham’s Sydney Canessa and La Salle’s Suzanne Swanicke were named the Atlantic 10 Softball Co-Players of the Week while Massachusetts’ Meg Colleran earned Pitcher of the Week. Also honored was Fordham’s Skylar Johnston who was named Rookie of the Week. The awards were based off performances from games held April 17-23.
Canessa had a terrific week at the plate, helping the Rams to a 4-1 record on the week with a .556 batting average, .583 on base percentage and a 1.056 slugging percentage. The senior set two records on the week and helped the team to another. In game one of Wednesday's doubleheader sweep at St. Bonaventure, Canessa went 6-for-6, a new program record, with five singles, a grand slam, four runs scored and a career-best eight runs driven in. She finished the day 6-for-9 with nine RBI as she added a walk and sac fly in game two. Against George Washington at home, Canessa batted 4-for-9 overall with four runs scored. The third run was the 182nd of her career, setting a new school record. In game one on Saturday, the Wall, N.J., native, smacked another home run, in addition to a sac fly and a walk. After a routine 1-for-4 performance in game two on Sunday, the senior roped her third bomb of the year to left centerfield and finished the day with two walks and three total runs scored. Her second walk of the day was the 100th of her career, becoming just the third Ram to ever reach the century mark.
Swanicke hit .667 on the week (10-for-15) with 11 RBI and five runs scored and tallied a .706 on-base percentage. Six of her 10 hits were for extra bases, including three homers, on the way to a 1.467 slugging percentage. The Yardley, Pa., native went 6-for-6 with two runs and five RBI in a doubleheader sweep of Drexel on Wednesday. The senior hit two home runs and doubled in each game of a doubleheader sweep at Saint Louis on Sunday.
Colleran went 3-0 in the circle to pace UMass to a 3-1 week. She posted wins over Boston College (2-1) and Saint Joseph’s (1-0, 3-1), giving up just one earned run and walking only two batters in 21 innings pitched. The junior struck out 11 batters total, including seven at Boston College on Wednesday, and posted an ERA of 0.33. She pitched a doubleheader at Saint Joseph’s, allowing just one earned run while walking only one in 14 innings pitched. The North Attleboro, Mass., native also struck out four Hawks. Among A-10 hurlers, she ranks fifth in opposing batting average (.229) and tied for second in wins (14).
Johnston slashed a .643 batting average, .667 on base percentage and a .857 slugging percentage for the week and notched a hit in all four games, including three multi-hit performances. At St. Bonaventure, Johnston went 3-for-5 with a two-run double and two runs scored as part of the team's record 23 runs scored. On Saturday, the freshman provided the go-ahead runs with a two-run single up the middle in the third inning to overtake the Colonials and eventually take the series opener, 8-3. On Sunday, the Virginia Beach, Va., native notched her third three-hit game of the year as well as her third three-RBI performance, finishing 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs driven in, plus two runs. On the week, the rookie tallied nine hits in 14 at bats with seven RBI, plus three doubles, four runs, and a walk.
