Rhode Island Wins 2016 Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship

FAIRFAX STATION, Va.— Rhode Island won the 2016 Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship Sunday morning at the Occoquan Reservoir at Sandy Run Regional Park. It is the third A-10 title in the last five years for the Rams, who advance to the NCAA Championship.

Rhode Island was tied with Massachusetts for the points total with 51 points, but the Rams claim the A-10 title based on their finish in the Varsity 8 Grand Final, which serves as the tiebreaker. Rhody won the Varsity 8 with a time of 7:37.30. The Minutewomen, who were two-time defending champions, placed second in the team standings. Rhode Island and UMass have combined for every A-10 team title since 1996 except one. Saint Joseph’s won the 2011 A-10 title.

Rhode Island finished second in both the Second Varsity 8 and the Varsity 4, the other two scoring races. UMass won both of those races and finished in second in the Varsity 8 with a 7:39.34 time. The Minutewomen won the Second Varsity 8 with a time of 8:07.10 and the Varsity 4 with a time of 8:27.60.

Fordham finished third in the team standings with 37 points and Duquesne was fourth with 35 point. Fordham placed fourth in the Varsity 8 ( 7:55.93), third in the Second Varsity 8 (8:22.76) and fifth in the Varsity 4 (9:03.97). Duquesne’s best finish was third in the Varsity 8 at 7:50.30.

Saint Joseph’s and George Washington tied at 30 points for fifth and sixth place. The Hawks were the third place finisher in the Varsity 4 (8:42.89). Dayton, George Mason and La Salle rounded out the team scoring respectively.

Rhode Island will represent the Atlantic 10 at the NCAA Championship at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, California, May 27-29.
