WASHINGTON— Kerrie Kortmann hit her first career home run Friday, a solo shot in the sixth inning, to lift No. 5 Saint Joseph’s to a 1-0 upset win over Atlantic 10 Conference regular season champion Fordham. It was the second upset of the 2016 A-10 Softball Championship for the Hawks at George Washington’s Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
Outside of Kortmann’s home run, the game was a pitchers’ duel, with just nine hits and 11 strikeouts shared by the hurlers on each team. SJU improved to 24-24-1 and will play the winner of Friday’s second game between No. 2 Dayton and No. 3 Massachusetts. Fordham (35-19) will play Saturday at 2:30 pm and facing the winner of Friday’s consolation bracket game.
Kortmann led off the sixth inning and faced a full count, having fouled off five pitches before her blast cleared the left field wall by 10 feet, just inside the foul pole.
Hawks’ starter Madison Clarke (8-8) got the win, throwing five scoreless innings and allowing four hits and one walk with four strikeouts. Ashley Ventura took over for Clarke and picked up her first save of the year, allowing two hits and two strikeouts in two scoreless innings.
Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, Lindsay Mayer, did her best to help Fordham with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate. She was the only batter on either team with more than one hit.
Rachel Gillen (14-10) took the loss, allowing just three hits and one run in a complete game in the circle. She struck out five Saint Joseph’s batters.
