NEW YORK, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure has earned a No. 1 seed in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), while Davidson and George Washington have also earned bids. Duquesne has accepted a bid and will host in the College Basketball Invitational and Fordham will host a first round game in the College Insider.com Tournament.
St. Bonaventure is a No. 1 seed in the National Invitation Tournament and will host Wagner College this Wednesday, March 16 at the Reilly Center. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. The regular season co-champion of the Atlantic 10 Conference, St. Bonaventure (22-8) earned an at-large berth. The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to face the winner of the Creighton-Alabama opening round game.
Mark Schmidt, the Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year, led the Bonnies to a share of the A-10 regular season championship – the first in program's 37 years in the conference. The Bonnies set a school record with 14 A-10 wins and tied a program record with 22 wins in the regular season.
For the seventh time in school history, Davidson will participate in the NIT as the fifth-seeded Wildcats will play at Florida State Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. The winner will meet the victor of Valparaiso/Texas Southern on a date and at a location to be announced.
Making their 20th postseason appearance (13 – NCAA, 7 – NIT) in school history, the Wildcats enter 20-12 overall following a setback to VCU in the semifinals of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Tournament.
George Washington earned an at-large bid and will host Hofstra on Wednesday at 8 p.m. on ESPN3. The Colonials are the No. 4 seed in the Monmouth Quadrant of the bracket while Hofstra is the No. 5 seed. The winner advances to face either Monmouth or Bucknell between March 18-21.
It marks GW's second consecutive and sixth all-time appearance in the NIT. GW reached the 20-win plateau for the third straight season in 2015-16, and its 23 victories are tied for the fifth most in school history. This is the Colonials' third straight postseason appearance, having been to the NCAA Tournament in 2014.
Duquesne will host Omaha in the first round of the 2016 College Basketball Invitational at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16. It will be the Dukes' first post-season appearance under fourth-year head coach Jim Ferry, and first by the program since 2011. Duquesne also made CBI appearances in 2010 and 2011. This is the ninth year for the 16-team tournament.
Fordham will host Boston University on Wednesday, March 16 at 7:00 pm in the first round of the College Insider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The game will be Fordham's first postseason appearance since the Rams won the Patriot League in 1992 and advanced to the NCAA Championships where they fell to UMass. It will also mark the first postseason game in the Rose Hill Gym since 1991 when Fordham hosted UMass in a second round NIT game in the building.
