AMHERST, Mass.— Erica Reis ripped a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a three-all tie and propel La Salle to a 4-3 win over No. 6 St. Bonaventure in the third game of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Championship Wednesday afternoon at Sortino Field.
The Explorers (14-21) advance in the consolation bracket and will play Thursday at 5:30 pm. La Salle had lost its championship opener to No. 4 George Mason, 2-1 earlier in the day on Wednesday. St. Bonaventure, which was eliminated from the championship, closed out its season at 15-24. It was the first berth in the double-elimination tournament for the Bonnies since 2009.
Reis’ blast, which gave the Explorers their first championship win since 1996, came just a half inning after Bona had tied the game at three on a RBI double by Grace Rooney that scored Kelli Rohan.
La Salle scored in the first inning on a ground-out RBI by Suzanne Swanicke that scored Michelle Hagarty. The Explorers held that lead until St. Bonaventure picked up a pair of third-inning runs. Rohan’s RBI single scored Emily McDonough and Rooney plated Rohan with an RBI double, putting the Bonnies in front 2-1.
But Alicia Aughton’s two-run home run that also scored Tori Gollie gave La Salle the lead back in the fourth inning, setting the stage for the seventh-inning back and forth.
Aughton went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Explorers at the plate. Mary Cate Scott (7-6) earned the victory, throwing seven innings and allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out four.
Rooney went 4-for-4 to lead all batters, picking up two RBI. Rohan also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored as well. Carly Bilchak (2-6) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
