NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Dayton has won the regular season and claimed the top seed for the 2015 Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Championship which begins Wednesday at Sortino Field in Amherst, Mass.
The Flyers finished the regular season at 20-2 in A-10 play, including 13 straight conference wins and a 37-12 overall record. Led by senior pitcher Kayla English, UD earns one of two byes through the first round of the double-elimination championship.
Saint Louis finished second in the standings at 18-5 to earn the second bye into the second round. The Billikens finished 36-16 overall and have won nine straight.
Two-time defending champion Fordham will be the third seed, finishing the regular season at 17-5 in A-10 play and 32-18 overall. The Rams will face sixth-seeded St. Bonaventure in the first round Wednesday at 2:30 pm. The Bonnies were 7-11 in league play and 15-22 overall. The Fordham-Bona winner will face Saint Louis at 2:30 pm on Thursday.
Fourth-seeded George Mason was 11-12 in conference play and will play fifth-seeded La Salle. The Patriots finished with a 21-27 mark overall. La Salle was 13-20 overall and claimed fifth place with a 9-11 A-10 mark. The Explorers and Mason will play at noon Wednesday in the championship’s opening game with the winner advancing to meet Dayton and noon on Thursday.
The double-elimination tournament features three games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and concludes Saturday with the final. Every game will be played at Sortino Field on the campus of the University of Massachusetts. The winner will earn the A-10’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Tickets begin at $8 for adults and $4 for youth. There are also championship ticket books and group ticket prices available.
