Top-Seeded UMass Upends George Mason In A-10 Women's Lax Semifinals

WASHINGTON – Hannah Murphy and Nicole Troost each scored three goals as the top-seeded Massachusetts topped fourth-seeded George Mason 12-3 in the semifinals of the 2015 Atlantic 10 Women’s Lacrosse Championship Friday afternoon in Washington, D.C., at The George Washington’s University’s, Mount Vernon Sports Complex.

UMass improves to 17-1 overall and advances to Sunday’s championship game where it will face either Richmond or Duquesne at Noon. Mason finishes its season at 10-7.

George Mason held possession early on before Erika Eipp and Troost scored 2:16 apart to give UMass a 2-0 advantage with just under 20 minutes to play in the half.

The score would stay that way until the 7:39 mark when an Amy Tiernan goal sparked what proved to be a 5-0 run for UMass to close the half.

After Murphy made it 8-0 in the opening minutes of the second-half, Mason got  back-to-back goals from Mackenzie Jones and Erin Anderson to cut the UMass lead to 8-2 with 20 minutes to play in the game.

That would be as close as the Patriots would get as Eileen McDonald scored what proved to the first of four consecutive UMass goals to boost its lead to 11-2.

Rachel Vallarelli made 11 saves for UMass, while Taylor Carpentier made seven stops for Mason.

Massachusetts outshot Mason 20-15 and won the draw control battle 10-5.
