DAYTON, Ohio - With just over a minute remaining in regulation, VCU's Jackie Ernest challenged Richmond Spider goalie Katie Brennan inside the box, and burried the gamewinning goal to lift the Rams to a 2-1 victory Thursday at Dayton's Baujan field in the 2014 Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship. VCU advances to Friday’s semifinals with the win.
The Spiders (9-9-2) dominated the first half offensively, scoring the in 14th minute when Ashley Riefner moved the ball down the left side of the field, crossing to a charging Ashley Williams, who finished the play for a 1-0 lead. Richmond outshot the Rams, 5-1 in the first frame.
The Rams (104-5) got on the board in the 62nd minute when Sharon Wojcik sent a perfect pass to Brianne Moore, who fired a shot from inside the box into the lower right corner of the goal.
The cross-town rivals battled throughout the remainder of the second half until the final minute. Jackie Ernest gathered the ball at the top of the 18, going one-on-one with Brennan, winning the face-off for her third goal, and third game-winner of the season.
VCU advances to Friday's 7:30 pm semifinal and will play the winner of Dayton and Saint Joseph's.
