CHARLOTTE, NC -- Xavier Parkmond’s infield single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted fifth-seeded George Washington to 5-4 victory over third-seeded Rhode Island Friday morning at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Championship.
George Washington advances to play Saint Louis at 3:30 p.m. in another elimination game. Rhode Island finishes its season with a record of 35-23.
The game which was halted due to rain and lighting last evening, resumed at 10:00 a.m. Friday with the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Rhode Island jumped out in front in the top-half of the sixth inning when Pat Fortunato delivered a two-out double to score Jeff Roy and make it 2-1 Rams.
Eric Kalman led off the GW seventh inning with a walk. After the next two batters were retired, Derek Brown delivered a homerun to put the Colonials on top 3-2.
Rhode Island rallied in the ninth inning, loading the bases with no outs and tied the score on a Chris Famiglietti single. Joe Landi followed with a single that plated Shane O’Connell to put URI up 4-3. On that same play, Pat Quinn was thrown out trying to score for the first out of the inning. GW reliever Luke Olson retired the next two batters to stop any further damage in the inning.
In George Washington’s final at bat, the Colonials loaded the bases and pushed across the game tying run on a Justin Albright walk.
Parkmond followed with a ground a ball to shortstop where Tim Caputo made a good play to get to the ball but was not in a position to cut down the runner at the plate.
Olson got the win to improve to 1-2, while Bobby Dean fell to 3-2 for Rhode Island.
