CHARLOTTE, NC - Saint Louis used a seven run first inning and a complete game effort on the mound from Nick Bates en route to a 13-4 victory over George Washington Friday afternoon at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship.
Saint Louis improves to 38-19 overall and advances to take on Xavier at 7:00 p.m. this evening with the winner advancing to Saturday's finals against Charlotte. GW finishes its season with a 26-32 record overall.
The Bills banged out a season high 20 hits against GW led by a 4-for-5, three RBI performance from Alex Kelly. Michael Bozarth was also 4-for-5 with an RBI. Twelve different Billikens recorded at least one hit in the win.
Bates scattered 10 hits on the day to improve to 8-3 on the season. The right-hander struck out seven batters and walked just two, while throwing 122 pitches.
SLU batted around in the first inning where it got those seven runs on eight hits, scoring on three doubles and a GW error.
In the second inning, George Washington scored on an RBI single to center field in the top of the inning. The Bills got that run back in the bottom of the frame on a single to right from Braxton Martinez, scoring two and bringing the lead to 9-1 Saint Louis.
The Billikens extended the lead again in the third, scoring on a wild pitch and an Kelly double to make it 11-1.
