Charlotte Defeats Rhode Island 5-2 Behind Hamilton's Complete Game

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte got a complete game from John Hamilton and took advantage of five Rhode Island errors en route to a 5-2 victory over the Rams in 2013 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship on Thursday.

Charlotte (36-21) advances to play Xavier at Noon on Friday with the winner moving onto Saturday’s championship round.  Rhode Island will have to turn around and take on George Washington at 8:30 p.m. tonight in an elimination game.

Hamilton threw 120 pitchers, allowing just five hits and two runs.   The southpaw struck out five and walked just one to improve to 6-3 on the season.

The 49ers got a run in the first inning when Shane Basen singled with two outs and came all the way around to score when Brad Elwood doubled to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead.

Rhode Island (35-23) pulled even at 1-1 in the third inning when Chris Famiglietti doubled and then scored after Tim Caputo followed with a single to tie the game.

Charlotte got a two-out RBI single by Derek Gallello that plated a pair of unearned runs in the fourth inning to put the 49ers up 3-1.

In the fifth inning, Elwood connected for a two-out RBI single that scored an unearned run for Charlotte to make it 4-1. 

Rhode Island would cut into its deficit with a run in the top of the eight, but Charlotte answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-2.

Sean Furney (7-4) took the loos for Rhode Island after surrendering four runs (1ER) over seven innings of work.   The A-10 Pitcher of the Year allowed six hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter.
