Richmond Takes 7-2 Decision over La Salle

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Seventh-seeded Richmond topped sixth-seeded La Salle 7-2 in an elimination game of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship Wednesday evening in Charlotte.  

Richmond (31-23) advances to play at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday against the loser the Saint Louis and Xavier game set for 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.   The loss eliminates La Salle who finishes its season with a 24-29 record overall.

Richmond took advantage of two La Salle errors in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.  Richmond added to its lead in third inning when Adam Forrer knocked in Mike Small to make it a 2-0 advantage for the Spiders.

La Salle’s first hit of the evening came in the bottom half of the inning when Brandon Day broke a 1-for-39 slump with a solo home run to left field. 

The Explorers walked the bases loaded in the Richmond half of the fourth inning.Tyler Beckwith would score on a wild pitch and Small singled home a run to give the Spiders a 4-1 edge.  

With the score 5-2 in favor or Richmond in the eighth inning,  the Spiders got a leadoff triple from Nick Poulos who would score when Beckwith single.  Three batters later, Beckwith scored on an error on the La Salle second baseman, making the Spider lead, 7-2.

Jason De Marte (5-1) got the win for Richmond going seven innings and allowing just one earned run.   De Marte struck out five and walked just a pair. 

Ryan Donohue took the loss for La Salle, dropping his record to 3-5 overall.
