PENNSAUKEN, N.J. - Saint Joseph's claimed its first Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship Saturday morning at the Cooper River posting top three finishes in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 to finish the regatta with 45 points.
Three schools finished in a three-way tie for first place as Massachusetts and Rhode Island joined Saint Joseph's with 45 points. The Hawks owned the tiebreaker between the tied teams which reverted back to the overall finish in the Varsity 8 competition. Saint Joseph's finished second in the Varsity 8 (8:04.45) followed by Massachusetts in third (8:07.95) and Rhode Island in fourth (8:09.26).
"This is great; this was our goal all year and our kids did a tremendous job," said Saint Joseph's head coach Gerry Quinlan. "When everyone performs well under such trying conditions, we are just glad that we scored enough points to hang on.
"It's always great when the big boat does well," added Quinlan. "But we wouldn't have gotten there (the championship) without the four's and the JV, who have had great seasons this year."
Massachusetts was awarded second place for the overall championship, while Rhode Island finished third. Rounding out this year's field was Dayton in fourth (41 points), Fordham in fifth (27), George Washington in sixth (24), Temple in seventh (23), Duquesne in eighth (14) and La Salle in ninth (4).
Dayton opened the finals winning the Varsity 8 by more than 12 seconds crossing the finish line in a time of 7:52.20. It marked the first win for the Flyers in the event final in school history. Members of the Flyers' Varsity 8 team included coxswain Kristin Dormish, Sadie Wonders, Katherine Bruening, Michele Baeder, Grace Doepker, Martha Sitkiewicz, Kerri Kramer, Molly Chipman and Erin Quinn.
"This is a big deal for us," said Dayton head coach Michael Wenker on the Flyers winning the Varsity 8 race. "We had a bad race in the morning but came back out in the finals and showed everyone what we had. I was very pleased; we had a lot of good practices this week in a lot of wind so we were pretty prepared for the conditions that were present today."
Rhode Island won the Second Varsity 8 finishing in a time of 8:32.01. Massachusetts (8:38.37) and Saint Joseph's (8:46.05) rounded out the top three. The win in the Second Varsity 8 was the second in a row for the Rams and fourth overall. The Rams' winning crew included Grace Rignanses (coxswain), Zoe Gentes, Kim Racine, Anne Edwards, Rachelle Green, Jackie Perry, Caitlin Dowd, Alice Murray and Meghan Sickinger.
The Rams also claimed the Varsity 4 race winning in a time of 9:44.16. The Minutewomen finished second (9:54.16) followed by the Hawks in third (10:03.30). URI has now won the Varsity 4 race four times including four in the last five years. Rhode Island's Varsity 4 crew included coxswain Chelsea Paulin, Kaitlyn Rupert, Celine Gill, Siobhan Norton and Alexandra Russo.
Rhode Island captured the Varsity 4B race (10:13.80) and Saint Joseph's won the Novice 8 finishing in a time of 8:39.91. The remaining schedule of the A-10 Rowing Championship was cancelled due to poor river conditions.
