PHILADELPHIA, PA - Atlantic 10 commissioner Linda Bruno today announced the league's annual recipients of postgraduate scholarships.
"The Atlantic 10 is proud to be able to provide opportunities for its student-athletes to continue their educations," says Bruno. "These young women and men are perfect examples of what college athletics is all about - attaining academic and athletic excellence. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors."
The Atlantic 10 annually awards four postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes who express an interest in continuing their education. This year's recipients are Cathy Joens of The George Washington University, Sarah Morrow of Duquesne University, Peter Tawczynski of the University of Massachusetts, and Erin Treadway of the University of Dayton. This is the eighth season that a total of four recipients have been selected.
Joens is a two-time Atlantic 10 women's basketball Player of the Year, sharing the award this season. The Irvine, CA, native averaged 19.4 points and 6.1 rebounds in 2003-04 en route to earning first-team All-Conference honors for the third consecutive year and honorable mention All-America acclaim. The graduate student ended her career third on GW's all-time career scoring list with 1,802 points. Owner of a 3.28 undergraduate grade point average as an exercise science major, Joens is currently enrolled in graduate school at George Washington, where she maintains a 4.00 gpa in public health. She has been on the Dean's List every semester at GW.
Morrow ended her volleyball career earning All-Conference honors. A resident of Baytown, TX, Morrow led the Dukes with a 3.07 kills per game average and was second on the squad with 23 aces and a digs per game average of 3.07. She was just one of three A-10 players to rank among the top 10 in both kills and digs. Just the fourth Duquesne player to record 1,000 kills (1,174) and digs (1,074) during her career, Morrow had 19 matches with double-figure kills and 17 with double-digit digs in 2003, including 12 matches in which she recorded a double-double. She has a 3.91 grade point average as a sociology major and has been on the Dean's List every semester. She is a member of several national honor societies and will pursue a law degree.
Tawczynski helped lead Massachusetts to four consecutive Atlantic 10 men's swimming titles during his career, earning All-Conference accolades all four years. At this year's A-10 Championship, the Holden, MA, native earned points by placing third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.32) and fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.70). He ranks second all-time at UMass in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.36), fifth in both the 100-yard breaststroke (57.90) and the 400-yard IM (4:01.49), and seventh in the 200-yard IM (1:52.81). An accounting major with a 3.21 GPA, Tawczynski will continue his accounting studies in graduate school at UMass.
Treadway capped a brilliant volleyball career by becoming the only player in A-10 history to be named Player of the Year, Student-Athlete of the Year, and Most Outstanding Performer of the A-10 championship in any sport in the same season. The team captain of 2004 A-10 champions, Treadway helped the Flyers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, where they beat Michigan State before losing to ninth-ranked Nebraska. A native of Dayton, she was a 2003 AVCA honorable mention All-America after leading the A-10 in kills (4.17). She ended her career sixth in kills (1,233) and seventh in digs (922) at UD, despite playing only three seasons. Dayton's 2004 NCAA Woman of the Year has a 3.75 grade point average as a pre-physical therapy major. A member of the Dean's List every semester, she will pursue a graduate degree in physical therapy.
