2006 Academic All-Conference Team

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Maine senior quarterback Ron Whitcomb has been named the 2006 Atlantic 10 Football Conference Student-Athlete of the Year.

The native of East Rochester, NY, captained the Black Bears to a 6-5 record in 2006, including a 5-3 record and second place finish in the A-10 North division. Whitcomb started all 11 games, completing 151 of 240 passes for 1,398 yards and nine touchdowns with only eight interceptions. He also rushed 162 times for 361 yards and six touchdowns.

Whitcomb ended his collegiate career as Maine's all-time leader for completions (755), passing attempts (1,276), and total offense (8,801 yards). He also threw for 8,363 yards and had 68 touchdown passes as well as being only the second quarterback in school history to lead the team in passing yards for four seasons.

In the classroom, Whitcomb maintains a 3.67 grade point average as a graduate student in education administration.

The Atlantic 10 Football Conference cited 96 student-athletes - 47 on offense and 49 on defense - as members of its Academic All-Conference team.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 and be a starter or key reserve. Voting is conducted by the Atlantic 10 Football Conference's sports information directors. First-year freshmen are ineligible.
